Introducción a la lingüística hispánica

COURSE SYLLABUS
Course description:
Prerequisite:  LIN 3010 or equivalent (may be taken concurrently with consent of instructor) and SPN 2201 or equivalent.  An introduction to Hispanic linguistics: Phonology, morphology, syntax, and lexicography.

Textbook:
Hualde, José Ignacio, Antxon Olarrea and Anna María Escobar.  Introducción a la lingüística hispánica.  Cambridge: University of Cambridge Press, 2001.  
Course objectives:
Students will develop an understanding of the nature of language and its social function through exposure to the discipline of linguistics, especially as applied to the Spanish language.
Course goals:
  1. To become aware of the different areas of specialization in linguistics.
  2. To master the terminology used in Spanish to describe different aspects of language. 
  3. To learn to use a system of phonetic transcription to accurately record utterances in Spanish. 
  4. To know the phonological system of Spanish and its allophones including dialectal and idiolectal variants. 
  5. To understand key differences between the phonological systems of English and Spanish. 
  6. To become familiar with morphological processes in Spanish.
  7. To develop an understanding of the principles of syntax and the analysis of sentence structures. 
  8. To understand the role of semantics in the comprehension of utterances. 
  9. To become acquainted with the factors leading to language change and the different forms that this change can acquire. 
  10. To learn about the dialectology of Spanish in the Iberian peninsula and the Americas.
  11. To learn about the use of Spanish in the United States and the phenomena associated with languages in contact.   
 

COURSE REQUIREMENTS
Attendance and participation:  While no percentage of the final grade is assigned to class attendance and participation, regular attendance is essential to the successful completion of the class.  Failure to attend regularly will result in diminished opportunity to participate in class discussion, lack of access to in-class group activities, review of exercises, and preparation for exams.
