Course
Description
This course is intended for undergraduates and beginning graduate
students whose area of specialization requires extensive use of
information resources (particularly online sources) related to Latin
America and U.S. Latinos, including materials in Spanish.
NOTE: There are no prerequisites for this course but students
should have a working knowledge of Spanish.

Course
Objectives
- Through the readings and activities in LIS 4930 Spanish/Lat
Am Web Resources ...
- Students will acquire basic searching strategies for
locating
materials in both English and Spanish on the World Wide Web (WWW).
- Students will become familiar with and know how to use
subscription databases -- both general and those specific to Latin
America.
- Students will know how to evaluate materials located on the
WWW.
- Students will know how to cite materials from online
databases as well as those located on the WWW.
- Students will become acquainted with basic information
sources
with focus on Latin America in the following fields or
disciplines:
geography, health, education, sociology, economics and business,
politics and human rights, international relations, arts and culture.
- Additionally, students will be able to locate and use
materials related to U.S. Latinos

Course
Requirements
- Completion of weekly exercises in Blackboard related to
searching skills and knowledge of subject specific databases.
- Four short research assignments involving location,
synthesis, and evaluation of informtion on assigned topics.
- Preparation of a pathfinder on a subject related to Latin
America.
- Successful completion of this course includes participation
in and meaningful contributions to class discussions.
