Spector, P. E., & Jex, S. M. (1998). Development of four self-report measures of job stressors and strain: Interpersonal Conflict at Work Scale, Organizational Constraints Scale, Quantitative Workload Inventory, and Physical Symptoms Inventory. Journal of Occupational Health Psychology, 3, 356-367. Abstract.
Despite the widespread use of self-report measures of both job-related stressors and strains, relatively few carefully developed scales for which validity data exist are available. In this paper, we discuss three job stressor (Interpersonal Conflict at Work Scale, ICAWS; Organizational Constraints Scale, OCS; and Quantitative Workload Inventory, QWI) and one job strain (Physical Symptoms Inventory, PSI) scales. Using meta-analysis, the results of 18 studies are combined to provide estimates of relations between our scales and other variables. Data showed moderate convergent validity for the three job stressor scales, suggesting some objectivity to these self-reports. Norms for each scale are provided.
