Analytical Methods: Schedule and Topics.

September 4th: Principles of Analytical Chemistry: geochemical data, precision and accuracy, relevant propulation statistics, reference material preparation and determination.

Reading: Potts, Chapter 1.

September 6th: Laboratory Demonstration: Laboratory tour: DC Plasma spectrometry and X-ray diffraction.

September 11th: Principles of Analytical chemistry, continued. Classic digestion methods, gravimetry, photometry, volatile determinations, colorimetry.

Reading: Potts, Chapter 2.

September 13th: Laboratory Demonstration: Sample preparation procedures for rock analysis - from solid rock to powder (and eventually to solution).

September 18th: Optical spectrometry and atomic absorption spectrophotometry: principles and uses.

Reading: Potts, Chapters 3, 4. 5 (clearly, not in scrupulous detail! Emphasis on beginning of C. 3, and C. 5)

September 20th: Laboratory Exercise: Preparation of Rock Standard samples for bulk analysis (We may need to start this a bit early - can be done in shifts)

September 25th-27th (TIMES to be arranged) Laboratory Exercise: Plasma Emission spectrometry multi-element analysis of standard rocks.

October 2nd: X-ray methods 1: X ray diffractometry. Principles, Bragg's Law, applications, powder vs. camera methods.

October 9th: X-ray methods 2: X ray fluorescence spectrometry. Principles and comparisons to optical emission spectrometry re: results.

October 16th: XRD-XRF redux.

October 18th: Laboratory Exercise: Running unknowns on the XRD!

October 23rd: Introduction to Microbeam methods: Principles and mechanics of

X-ray microanalysis. Sample preparation

Readings: Potts, Chapters 9 and 10.

October 30th: Electron Microprobes: EDS and WDS analytical methodologies. Data correction methods.

November 27th: Solid and Gas source Mass Spectrometers -- Positive and Negative ion TIMS. Isotope Dilution analysis, Isotopic ratio measurements. Rb/Sr, Sm/Nd, U/Th/Pb; 18O, 13C 15N. Also 11B, 7Li. and 10/9Be.

December 4th: ICP-MS as a mass spectrometry technique. Principles, benefits, perils.

December 10-14th: Professor Away at Fall AGU Meeting - Completed projects must be handed in by December 14th!!
