About PhotoNoter

PhotoNoter is a Java application for Windows 95, 98, Me, 2000, NT 4.0, XP, Linux, Unix, and Mac!

PhotoNoter is the most powerful and most interesting photo annotating software. You can annotate you photo using any fonts in you computer; you can write to your photo in any place; you can move, rotate, scale, shear the text on the photo; you can set the background color and transparency as well as the text color and transparency. And you can print and preview the result. Using photoNoter, you can annotate your photos, create your own post-card, design CD cover, and much much more!

With PhotoNoter, you can:

  1. Open and save photos (.jpg images) with different photo quality (from 0 to 100).
  2. You can add, edit, delete annotates to your photo.
  3. Annotate your photo using all the fonts in your computer, and you can see what a font looks like before using it.
  4. You can set the style (Bold, Italic, Bold&Italic), size, background color, and font color of the annotates easily.
  5. You can set the transparency of the background color and the font color easily. Using this function, you can highlight a potion of the photo using any color.
  6. You can move, rotate, scale, and shear the annotates very easily to get different effects.
  7. You can align the annotates to different edge of the photo: align left, align center, align right, align top, align middle, align bottom.
  8. You can save all the annotates on a photo to a PhotoNoter Annotate Pattern file (.pap file), and you can apply this pattern to your other photos.
  9. You can print and preview the annotated photo.

System requirements

  • Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 1.3.1 or above for the operation system your machine use. You can download it free from: http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/jre/
  • Operation systems: any one of:
        Windows 95/98/ME/NT 4.0/2000/XP
        Linux
        Unix (Solaris)
        Mac
  • 32 MB RAM or more
  • 1 MB free disk space
  • VGA - True Color video mode

Installation:

  1. If you download the .exe file, run and Unzip the PhotoNoter.exe file 
    to any directory you want (like c:\PhotoNoter).
    If you download the .zip file, unzip the PhotoNoter.zip to any director you want.
    If you download the .jar file, just put it in any directory you want.
  2. In this directory, just click or double-click the file: PhotoNoter.jar to run it
    It's that simple!
  3. UNINSTALL:
    Just delete the directory you install PhotoNoter to it.

File Operations:

Open photo - Open a existing photo (.jpg file) on the disk.

Save as - save the photo using a name you input or choose in the "Save as..." dialog. You don't need to input the file extension (.jpg), the program will add it. 

Save as pattern - save all the annotates on the photo as a PhotoNoter Annotate Pattern file (.pap file) for latter use.

Load pattern - open an existing pattern (.pap file) on the disk and apply the pattern to the current photo.

Set photo quality - set the photo quality from 0 to 100: 0 means the worst quality but best compress; 100 means the best quality but worst compress (in fact, no compress). The default value is 75, which usually means the medium quality.

Page set up - set up the page (such as paper size, margins, etc)  for print the photo.

Print preview - preview the photo to be printed.

Print - print the photo with annotates.

Exit PhotoNoter without save anything.

Annotate Operations:

To use these operation and most of the following operations, you must first choose the annotate you want to apply the operation, that is, you must first click on the annotate. The current selected annotate has a white box around it. You can click on any place without annotates to un-selected all annotate.

Add text - add an annotate to the photo. The text will be placed at the left-top corner initially.

Change text - change the current selected annotate. Only the text is changed, the other property will remain the same.

Delete text - delete the current selected annotate.

Fonts Operations:

Font name - choose the font name for the current selected annotate. As show on the left, you can  actually see what a font looks like before applying it!  

Font style - choose the font style for the current selected annotate. There are four kinds of styles: Plain, Bold, Italic, and Bold&Italic. Please note that some font has not Bold or Italic styles.

Font size - choose the font size for the current selected annotate. The size is from 10 to72 (point). But by using the scale operation, you can generate very small or very large font size.

Color operations:

You can choose the background color and font color for the current selected annotate. The background color decide which color is blend with the photo when its transparency is less than 100 (that is, it's not fully opaque).  There are many convenient ways to choose or change the background color and the font color. 

1. Fast choose - Using the following color palette to choose one of the 18 most popular colors:

When you left-click one of the 18 palette, the font color is changed to this color, and the background color is changed when you right-click a palette. Also, the current background color and font color is displayed above the color palettes. The bigger rectangle represent the background color, while the inner small one represent the font color.

2. Fine choose -  If the color you want is not at the color palettes, you can bring out a color chooser dialog window by click the color display rectangles or choose from the "color" menu:

You can choose the color you want is three ways: Swatches, HSB, and RGB.

Transparency Operations:

You can change the transparency of the background color and the font color. The transparency of an image or color decides how much of the underground image is displayed. Here we use a scale from 0 to 100 to represent transparency. Zero (0) represent fully transparent, that is, all the underground image is displayed; And 100 represent fully opaque, that is, non of the underground image is displayed.

By using different transparency for the background color and the font color, you can get many kinds of effects, for example, if you set the font's transparency to 0 and choose a yellow background color with transparency less than 100, you can highlight a potion of the photo.

You can use the following slider and menu to change the transparency:

1. By click on the bar of the slider, you can change the transparency 1 at a time.

2. By dragging the box of the slider, you can change the transparency continually. 

3. By using the "Transparency" menu, you can change (increase or decrease) the transparency of the background color or the font color 1 step at a time.

Format (Align) Operations:

Format or Align operations let you put the current selected annotate to the edges, corners, or center of the photo.

Align left - align the current selected annotate to the left of the photo.

Align center - align the current selected annotate to the center of the photo horizontally. 

Align right - align the current selected annotate to the right of the photo.

Align top - align the current selected annotate to the top of the photo.

Align center vertically - align the current selected annotate to the center of the photo vertically.

Align bottom - align the current selected annotate to the bottom of the photo.

Transform Operations:

There are four kinds of transform operations to annotates: move, rotate, scale and shear. Apart form move operation, all the transform operations can be performed using the "Control Center":

I. Move Operations:

You can move the current selected annotate on the background photo. There are two kinds of method to move the annotate:

1. Fast move - By dragging the current selected annotate to the position you want. When the mouse become the ship of a moving pointer, you can drag the annotate under it to anywhere on the background photo. 

2. Fine move - By choose the eight direction arrows in the "FineMove" menu,   you can move the current selected annotate one point a time to the corresponding direction.

II. Rotate Operations:

You can use three kinds of ways to rotate the current selected annotate on the photo: FreeRotate, AutoRotate, and FastRotate.

1. FreeRotate - By dragging the box of the rotation slider, you can rotate the current selected annotate from 0 to 360 degree.  You can also change the degree 1 at a time by click on the bar of the slider.

2. AutoRotate - By clicking the play button under the rotation slider, the current selected annotate will automatically rotate one step at a time anticlockwise. And you can change the steps between 1 and 10 by click the step-increase and step-decrease buttons.

3. FastRotate - By choose the eight direction arrows in the "FastRotate" menu,   you can rotate the current selected annotate to one of the eight predefined directions:

Top-Right: rotate the current selected annotate 45 degrees, that is, the text will draw (from bottom-left) to top-right.

Top: rotate the current selected annotate 90 degrees, that is, the text will draw (from bottom) to top.

Top-Left: rotate the current selected annotate 135 degrees, that is, the text will draw (from bottom-right) to top-left.

Left: rotate the current selected annotate 180 degrees, that is, the text will draw (from right) to left.

Bottom-Left: rotate the current selected annotate 225 degrees, that is, the text will draw (from top-right) to bottom-left.

Bottom: rotate the current selected annotate 270 degrees, that is, the text will draw (from top) to bottom.

Bottom-Right: rotate the current selected annotate 315 degrees, that is, the text will draw (from top-left) to bottom-right.

Right: rotate the current selected annotate 360 (that is 0) degrees, that is, the text will draw (from left) to right. This is the initial degree of the annotate.

III. Scale Operations:

You can perform scale operation both for the x and y direction to the current selected annotate. And there are to ways to do this:

1. FreeScale - By dragging the box of the scale-X or scale-Y slider, you can rotate the current selected annotate from 0 to 400 where 400 means a four-time scale  You can also change the scale 1 at a time by click on the bar of the slider.

2. FastScale - By choose the eight scale items in the "FastScale" menu,   you can scale the current selected annotate to 1, 2, 3, and 4 for x or y directions:

Scale X:100 - scale the current selected annotate to 1 time in x-direction. This equivalent to no scale operation, or change back to the original size of the annotate.

Scale X:200 -  scale the current selected annotate to 2 times in x-direction.

Scale X:300 -  scale the current selected annotate to 3 times in x-direction.

Scale X:400 -  scale the current selected annotate to 4 times in x-direction.

Scale Y:100 - scale the current selected annotate to 1 time in y-direction. This equivalent to no scale operation, or change back to the original size of the annotate.

Scale Y:200 -  scale the current selected annotate to 2 times in y-direction.

Scale Y:300 -  scale the current selected annotate to 3 times in y-direction.

Scale Y:400 -  scale the current selected annotate to 4 times in y-direction.

IV. Shear Operations:

You can perform shear operation both for the x and y direction to the current selected annotate. And there are to ways to do this:

1. FreeShear - By dragging the box of the shear-X or shear-Y slider, you can shear the current selected annotate from -100 to +100, where negative means shear to right for x direction or shear to top for y direction while positive means shear to left for x direction or shear to bottom for y direction. You can also change the shear 1 at a time by click on the bar of the slider.

2. FastShear - By choose the ten shear items in the "FastShear" menu,   you can shear the current selected annotate to the predefined positions for x or y directions:

Shear X-100: shear the current selected annotate to right as  shows.

Shear X-50: shear the current selected annotate to right as  shows.

Shear X-0: No shear for x direction.

Shear X+50: shear the current selected annotate to left as shows.

Shear X+100: shear the current selected annotate to left as shows.

Shear Y-100: shear the current selected annotate to top as shows.

Shear Y-50: shear the current selected annotate to top as shows.

Shear Y-0: No shear for y direction.

Shear Y+50: shear the current selected annotate to bottom as shows.

Shear Y+100: shear the current selected annotate to bottom as shows.

Other Operations:

Show or hide the "Control Center". For large photo, you can hide the Control Center to get more display space.
