Attack of the Killer Comic Reviews! n o.6 *********************************************************** This week's haul: Aliens/Predator: The Deadliest of the Species 9 (Dark Horse) Cyberforce 9 (Image) Prince Valiant 3 (Marvel) Roadways 4 (Cult) Sludge: Red X-Mas 1 (Malibu/Ultraverse) Spawn 26 (Image) Wiindows 21 (Cult) Xenozoic Tales 13 (Kitchen Sink) Mailbox haul: Hutch Owen's Working Hard (New Hat) *********************************************************** Aliens/Predator: The Deadliest of the Species 9 (of 12) Our heroes are still running from both the Alien Queen and the killer TekSec robots, and the mystery around Ash Parnall deepens. ($2.50, Dark Horse) Cyberforce 9 Chris Claremont is at it again, scripting another Image book. Huntsman appears again, but he seems shoehorned into the middle of things, like he was in WildCATs. He spars with the heroes over a misunderstanding in classic Marvel style before they team up against the common foe. ($1.95, Image) Prince Valiant 3 (of 4) Is there any way we can convince Marvel to make this an ongoing series? ($3.95, Marvel) Roadways 4 (of 4) It's been a wait, but the final issue of this miniseries is out, and it ends with a good old fashioned rocket propelled bang. The creators have moved on to other projects, so it's doubtful we'll be seeing any more of this book, unfortunately. ($2.75, Cult Press, 1047 W. Carson St. Suite 3, Torrance, CA 90502) Sludge: Red X-Mas 1 It's about a big blue guy and a twelve year old hitboy. It all seems so silly and inconsequential, like what you'd get if Archie started a super-hero universe. It's got its charms, I guess, but they don't seem to be working on me. ($2.50, Malibu/Ultraverse) Spawn 26 The book opens with an overwritten monologue about the evil of money, which is hypocritical coming from a guy who puts pictures of his Pacific rim sweatshop in the back of the book and wants to become the next Disney. And in the letter pages, the fun continues: "Peter David is fat and balding." Oh, *that's* mature. Go play with your toys, Todd. Right now, I'm looking for a reason why I should keep buying this title. ($1.95, Image) Wiindows 21 Wiindows is subtitled "The Anthology of the Bizarre". And what could be more bizarre than real life? This is "The Somewhat Self-Indulgent, Semi-Autobiographical Issue", featuring some of the best creators of this enormous genre: Dennis Eichhorn, Mary Fleener, Roberta Gregory, David Lasky, and a bunch of others. There's even a story from Neil Gaiman, illustrated by Bryan Talbot, on where he gets all those ideas. This isn't a definitive volume, nor does it feature the best work of these creators, but it's an enjoyable and diverse 48 pages. ($2.75, Cult) Xenozoic Tales 13 It's been two years since the last issue of XT(and you people complain about Hepcats). This is my first exposure to the Cadillacs and Dinosaurs saga, mainly because I don't feel like spending $15 for TPs that only reprint four issues, but I can see what the fuss is about. Excellent art in the Wally Wood school, and a story full of political intrigue. ($2.95, Kitchen Sink, 320 Riverside Drive, Northampton, MA 01060) Hutch Owen's Working Hard In the tradition of lovable misanthropes like Ned Ludd and George Washington Hayduke comes Tom Hart's Hutch Owen, the latest rebel to rage against the corporate machine. Tom Hart has written this charming and sobering story about rebellion and commercialism that slowly draws you into its world, then floors you with its message at the end. I may not have read many mini comics, but this one is certainly one of the best. All you comic companies out there, snap this guy up! ($3.95, Tom Hart, P.O. Box 95973, Seattle, WA 98145-2973) Hey, if that's not clear enough for you: Buy this damn book!!!!!! *********************************************************** Attack of the Killer Comic Reviews is posted on rec.arts.comics.misc, rec.arts.comics.info, and Comics-L whenever I feel like it. An abridged version is posted to the comix mailing list and alt.comics.alternative(which doesn't appear at my site, so vote yes for raca!). Feedback is welcome and encouraged. I also publish a print fanzine called Stick Figures which is in need of submissions and subscriptions. (Hint, hint) Comics and stuff sent to me will be reviewed here and possibly in Stick Figures.
