ISS FOUNDERS & ISS COUNCIL: A HISTORY

The initial attempt to found an International Shaw Society occurred at a Shaw Conference at Marquette U. in Milwaukee in April of 2000, but that was not followed through on. More successful was an August 24th, 2002 meeting at the Shaw Festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, at which 21 people voted to found the ISS on an informal basis and charged the chair of the meeting, Professor Richard F. Dietrich of the University of South Florida, with discovering the exact means by which an ISS might be established as a not-for-profit, tax-exempt organization, if that option were chosen.   On August 20th, 2003, a meeting chaired by Professor Dietrich and attended by 28 people in all, voted unanimously to pursue not-for profit incorporation of the ISS, passed Articles & Bylaws, and elected Professor Dietrich president, charging him with pursuing official application in the U.S. and the state of Florida for not-for-profit, tax-exempt status.  That was accomplished by February of 2004, and the ISS is now a legally established nonprofit corporation, with a growing membership, interested in the study of the life, times, and career of George Bernard Shaw and his circle and the promotion of that interest.  Below is, first, the list of people who attended either the August 24th, 2002 or the August 20th, 2003 meeting, or both, supplemented by a few who did not attend but who later agreed to serve as members of the founding Advisory Board and/or as signatories on applications, followed by a list of the founding ISS Council, composed of an Executive Committee and an Advisory Committee:.
