Sponsored by the Academy of the Shaw Festival and the International Shaw Society

Proposals are invited for short papers (twenty minutes) and panel topics for the First Annual Shaw Symposium at Niagara-on-the-Lake, 23-25 July 2004. Sponsored by the Academy of the Shaw Festival and the International Shaw Society, the symposium will focus on the two Shaw plays at the 2004 Shaw Festival, Pygmalion (directed by Jackie Maxwell) and Man and Superman (directed by Neil Munro).

The symposium will convene early on Friday evening, 23 July, at the Festival Theatre for a short welcome and social gathering, allowing time for participants to attend a play of their choice that evening.  Saturday morning and afternoon will be occupied with papers and panel discussions and a short informal meeting of the ISS.  Participants will attend the Saturday evening performance (Festival Theatre) of Pygmalion. On Sunday morning there will be a discussion on directing Shaw with Jackie Maxwell and Neil Munro.  The symposium will conclude at 11 am on Sunday, giving participants an opportunity to see Man and Superman (including Don Juan in Hell) at the Festival Theatre beginning at 11:30 am.

All symposium sessions will be held in the new Sonja N. Koerner Library at the Festival Theatre.

It is hoped that proposals for papers and panel topics will be directed towards provoking lively discussion, for which ample time will be allowed. Submissions from younger scholars are particularly encouraged.

There will be a registration fee of $100 Canadian per participant, which will include the reception, coffee during the sessions, a casual lunch on Saturday, and an A+ ticket for Pygmalion on Saturday night.  Additional tickets for Pygmalion and tickets for Man and Superman can also be purchased when you register. Participants are responsible for arranging their own travel and accommodation.

PROPOSALS for papers and panel topics should be sent to Dr. Leonard Conolly, preferably as an attachment to an email (lconolly@trentu.ca), but if you get blocked sending email to Trent U, sent it by mail to Professor Leonard Conolly, Department of English, Trent University, Peterborough, Ontario, Canada K9J 7B8.   A 300-500 word abstract should suffice.  Deadline is March 31, 2004.   You should know if your proposal has been accepted or not by no later than May 1, 2004.
