Calculating Radiation Exposure from Iodine-125 Implants

by Katelyn VanValkenburgh

Submitted : Spring 2021

The objective is to find how much radioactive energy is released from an Iodine-125 implant in the first month of Brachytherapy and determine if this is a safe level for long term treatment for cancer. This is found by finding the decay constant and integrating the exponential decay formula definitely. It was found to emit less than 1 rem which is five times less than the recommended annual maximum. This confirms internal radiation therapy is a low-risk treatment for locally malignant carcinoma.
