Covid-19 Infection Rate in Relation to Quarantine and Vaccine Efficacy

by Devin Keeley

Submitted : Fall 2020

By extrapolating from a known formula describing the spread of the SARS virus, we compare the efficacy of quarantine and vaccination in inhibiting the spread of a similar coronavirus we currently face in pandemic proportion, the Covid-19 virus. Using multivariable calculus, we can take partial derivatives to find each variable’s weight in the equation. With growing skepticism in the effectiveness of vaccines and quarantining, we hope to add more mathematically based facts to the conversation and maybe change some people’s perceptions.
