Hanging on: How Length affects Tension in a Rope with Mass

by Nael Lopez Camargo

Submitted : Spring 2020

The goal of this project is to find the Tension in a rope that is hanging from a ceiling. Using Newton’s Second Law allowed us to set up balanced equations for the forces acting on a specific point on the string. Using the definition of Δy we ended up with derivative functions we could integrate. Setting up the bounds of integration and solving for it, followed by using physics concept and solving for T allowed us to find the relationship between tension and the length x of the string.
