Using the Gompertz function to Predict the Progression of COVID-19 Pandemic in Puerto Rico

Submitted : Spring 2020

In this project, the total number of COVID-19 contagions in Puerto Rico across time are analyzed using the Gompertz method. This method is a nonlinear regression model used to describe population growth, in this case of infected people. Since the function is sigmoidal, the goal is to define the point in which the growth rate of infected people reaches 0. The data gathered using this method can be used to understand the tendency of the virus, how the government measures affect the propagation, and the expected plateau of the curve. Microsoft’s Excel solver was used to plot the data and determine the constant values.
