Changing Electric Vehicle Acceleration by Reducing Weight

by Carlos Morin

Submitted : Fall 2019

This project uses the numbers for a Tesla Model 3 (Standard Range Plus) as an example vehicle to analyze the effect of weight removal on a vehicle, due to its single gear ratio and widely available data. To accomplish this, calculus will be used in the context of physics applications, such as Newton’s laws of motion. Physics equations will be used to estimate the 0 to 60 mile per hour (100 kilometers per hour) times of the vehicle’s curb weight (the weight of the vehicle with all standard equipment and necessary consumables), 200 pounds less than curb weight, 500 pounds less, and 1000 pounds less.
