Locating the Center of Mass of Various Simplified Car Designs

by Sullivan Musgrove

Submitted : Fall 2019

The project given was to find the center of mass of given simplified car designs for the problem of flipping over an incline. The project was given by Dmitri Voronine who is a Professor in the Department of Physics. The center of mass of an object or system is the average point of the system when taking account of the weight and area of the object. It can also be explained as the balance point of the system. The goal of the project is to derive formulas to understand the process of finding the center of mass of symmetric and non-symmetric objects, as well as to understand what causes a car to flip over an incline. The writer looks over two cases in the given project and tests each case over three various inclines. With all of these found the writer found the main factors that caused the likeliness of a car to flip.
