Invertebrate Evolutionary Relationships

Department of Biology, University of South Florida, email to: garey@chuma1.cas.usf.edu

This page is dedicated to molecular and morphological studies of invertebrate phylogeny.  We specialize in the "Lesser-Known" taxa, particularly those once collectively known as "aschelminthes".  These lesser-known invertebrates are the key to understanding animal evolution.  Our most current hypothesis of animal evolution has the initial branching of bilateral animals between protostomes and deuterostomes.  The protostomes are divided into two major groups:  Ecdysozoa (molting animals) consists of Cycloneuralia (sensu Ehlers) + Panarthropoda.  Lophotrochozoa (Spiralia) consists of all the non-molting protostomes.  Within Lophotrochozoa is a group Platyzoa that consists of  Platyhelminthes, Gastrotricha, Rotifera, Gnathostomulida and the new group Micrognathozoa.  See below for publications from the Garey lab concerning animal phylogeny.
